Typically, torque is reduced by slowing bowl RPM. Hydraulic Balance Line Pump
In a centrifugal pump, the hydraulic balance line is essential for ensuring that the pressure on both sides of the impeller remains balanced. Pump Balance Line Size
The size of the balance line in a centrifugal pump is critical for maintaining the hydraulic balance and preventing issues such as vibration or excessive wear on pump components. The size of the balance line is determined based on factors such as the flow rate, pressure, and type of fluid being pumped. A balance line that is too small may result in pressure imbalances, while a line that is too large could lead to inefficiencies in the pump system.
Axial Pump Balance Line
In axial pumps, the balance line plays a crucial role in ensuring that the axial thrust generated by the impeller is properly balanced. The balance line in an axial pump is designed to counteract the axial forces exerted on the impeller, preventing damage to the pump bearings and shaft. Proper sizing and placement of the balance line are essential for maintaining the long-term reliability and efficiency of axial pumps.
Hydraulic Balance Line
I've posted examples of a BB3 and a BB5 pump below with the location of the balance line highlighted for each. (The configuration for a BB4 will typically be the same as a BB5). As

Generally speaking, sludge thickening before dewatering will reduce the tankage needed for storage by removing water; dewatering works to remove more water producing a drier cake material (source: EPA - Centrifuge Thickening and Dewatering of Biosolids).
